BLEPHAROPLASTY (Eyelid surgery)

Blepharoplasty is the solution for the "sad" and tired look that occurs when the eyelid drops. Over the years and the aging of the skin, it causes the facial skin to sag. The look loses its expressiveness and radiance, and very often the sagging in the eye area can also obstruct vision. Eyelid surgery restores a youthful look, a relaxed appearance and clear vision.

BLEPHAROPLASTY (Eyelid surgery)

Blepharoplasty Overview

Blepharoplasty, more commonly known as eyelid surgery, can be performed on either the upper or lower eyelids, or both. The aim is to reduce sagging in the lower eyelid and remove excess tissue from the upper. It is a great way to regain the youthful look of your eyes. Furthermore, it is a procedure that can significantly improve your vision, as well as how you transmit your emotions.

BLEPHAROPLASTY (Eyelid surgery) How does it work?

Blepharoplasty on the upper and lower eyelids is performed surgically and can be performed on both eyelids at the same time, if there is an indication. Essentially, during the blepharoplasty surgery, excess skin and/or fat is removed, improving both the aesthetic result and any vision problems.
Eyelid surgery is performed under local anesthesia and no general anesthesia is required. Thus, the patient returns immediately and quickly, without discomfort, to his/her daily activities and work.
The duration of the procedure is approximately 1-1.5 hours and the patient can return home immediately after the procedure, as no hospital stay is required.

Types of Blepharoplasty Upper Blepharoplasty

It is a fact that over time, the upper eyelids loosen and due to gravity they sag. As a result, the eyes lose their expressiveness and also limit the patient's vision. In such a case, the solution is upper blepharoplasty, which addresses the problem both from the aesthetic side (to reduce the appearance of aging) and from the functional side (better vision). Upper blepharoplasty removes excess skin and swollen fat from the patient's upper eyelid.

The photo shows a patient of MD Clinics. Anastasia has been noticing loosening of the skin in the upper eyelid area in the mirror every morning. So, she decided to make the eyes the star of her face again. She approached Dr. Elias Moustakis at MD Clinics for the Upper Blepharoplasty surgery and her decision proved her right.

Types of Blepharoplasty Lower Blepharoplasty

The signs of time can also appear on the lower eyelid, which results in the formation of dark circles and "bags". Similarly to upper blepharoplasty, the same technique is used where excess skin and fat is removed from the lower eyelids, altering the appearance of the eye and the face in general.

In the photo, the patient had developed dark circles and "bags" under her eyes, making her look older and constantly tired. She turned to Dr. Ioannis Daliannoudis and MD Clinics for Lower Blepharoplasty surgery and was able to shake off the years and fatigue from her eyes.

Blepharoplasty Recovery time

Blepharoplasty is performed under local anesthesia. Therefore, no hospitalization is required and the patient returns home immediately.
In the first few days, the use of cold patches on the eyelids is recommended, so as to reduce as much as possible the swelling (swelling) in the area and the bruising (bruises). Antibiotic cream is also required to prevent infection from the 'open' surgical wound, as well as eye drops.
No special care is required in the first few days after eyelid surgery. It is recommended to avoid strenuous physical exercise, weight lifting and bending over for about 1-2 weeks after the surgery. It is also recommended to avoid make-up, especially in the eye area, for the first 7 days or so until the stitches are removed.

BLEPHAROPLASTY (Eyelid surgery) Results

The first results after blepharoplasty are immediately visible and the patient immediately notices the lifting of the eyelids and the removal of excess skin. In the first few days there is likely to be severe swelling in the area. Therefore the result is not the final result. The final result is visible about 2 weeks after the blepharoplasty when the re-examination and suture removal is performed, and continues to improve as the wound heals up to 6 months. Most patients report, they immediately begin to feel more confident and the look looks more youthful and relaxed from the first few weeks.

Blepharoplasty Complications

Blepharoplasty is a completely safe procedure performed under local anesthesia. However, as with any surgical procedure, complications may follow which can be treated quickly and painlessly in the hands of an experienced surgeon.
Complications can be mild or more severe and include:
Bleeding
Xerophthalmia
Difficulty in opening and closing the eyes
Temporary difficulty in vision (blurred vision)

BLEPHAROPLASTY (Eyelid surgery) Frequently Asked Questions

How long does recovery last?

After the operation, the stitches are removed in about 7 days. Small lines and redness can be covered with the use of make-up. Bruising is extremely rare and swelling subsides after the first week. Once you have completed the two weeks you are free to enjoy the new, refreshed look of your eyes.

What will my face look like immediately after surgery?

Your eyelids are likely to look swollen after the surgery. The incisions will also look red. All of this is completely expected and normal.

Will my vision be affected?

No. On the contrary, the field of vision will be increased and in no case is vision affected as we do not interfere with the eyeball at all.

Why should I have blepharoplasty?

Because it will restore a more youthful appearance to your face by eliminating the wrinkles and puffiness around your eyes.
Because it literally opens your eyes, widening the scope of your vision.
Because it relieves possible pains in the forehead caused by the tired muscles.
Because it reduces skin irritations resulting from skin friction in the skin folds around the eyes.

Does eyelid surgery hurt?

Eyelid surgery is performed under local anesthesia, which makes it a painless procedure. After the surgery there may be local swelling, pain or any discomfort from the stitches, but these are transient and last for a few days. The pain is treated with common painkillers.

What should I do before blepharoplasty?

The plastic surgeon you choose for your blepharoplasty surgery must inform you extensively about the preparation before the surgery. Indicatively, this preparation may include, among other things, an eye examination if you have eye problems. You may also need to stop any medication that contributes to blood thinning a few days before the surgery. Finally, it is advisable for smokers to reduce or possibly stop smoking a few days before the surgery, as it significantly reduces healing and increases the risk of complications.

Why does the eyelid drop?

The causes of drooping of the eyelid vary and can be mycogenous, neurogenic or
traumatic. It occurs due to a malfunction of the anelctor muscle, the muscle responsible for the
elevation of the eyelid. Eyelid droop is distinguished in congenital (occurs from the moment of
birth) or acquired (occurs at a later age).
In the first case it should be corrected, as it can lead to amblyopia. When it is
acquired the drooping of the eyelid in the early stages is not easily noticeable.

Do men get blepharoplasty too?

Yes. A significant number of men of all ages choose to have blepharoplasty for a more youthful look and a more relaxed look.

Will the operation leave any scars?

No. There is usually no visible scar after the healing is complete. The incisions in the eyelids are made following natural skin folds. Once healed they will fade, leaving a very inconspicuous incision line that becomes virtually unnoticeable after healing.

What should I do after eyelid surgery?

The instructions after eyelid surgery include the following:
Make-up in the eye area.
Smoking.
Intense gymnastics.
Rub the eye area and the face in general.
The weight lifting.
At the same time, you should avoid:
Apply ice packs regularly to reduce pain and swelling in the eye area.
Sleep in a relatively upright position, so that the head is higher than the chest.
Wear sunglasses with dark lenses in bright sunshine.
Apply moisturising eye drops as directed by your doctor.

How long do the results last?

Generally, the results of blepharoplasty surgery are permanent. However, with the passage of time, gravity and aging can cause the skin to loosen again and the eyelids to droop. Therefore, there may be an indication for blepharoplasty surgery again after 10-15 years.

How much does an eyelid surgery cost?

The cost of a blepharoplasty depends on many factors, such as the extent of the problem, whether upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty or both are required, as well as the expectations of each patient. In any case, a diagnostic appointment is always made with the surgeon, in which the needs of the operation and its cost are determined.

Who is the best doctor for eyelid surgery?

The best doctor for blepharoplasty is the one who will first listen to the concerns of the person concerned. Then from the very first appointment, he will be completely honest with the patient about the result and expectations, and will explain the procedure in depth, both pre- and post-operatively.

On his part, the person concerned should look for a qualified doctor with long experience. During the appointment it is advisable to ask for testimonials of previous patients and also to see before and after results.
